A Refresher in Driving Etiquette Just for You!

So it may have been a few years since you’ve been in drivers ed, or let’s face it, maybe even a few decades! And quite possibly, over the years, you may just have forgotten some things and are now making some uber driving faux pas and you don’t even know it.  Sheesh, and you wonder why you get honked at!

Now let’s get refreshed. Drivers etiquette refreshed that is!

  1. Pedestrians have the right of way. So you may be a few minutes on time and the person who is crossing in the crosswalk, at the pace of a snail it seems, is taking forever. You need to back off and give them their space. No one even really likes having to be in the crosswalk, much less be antagonized in one by you!

  2. Tailgating is not going to get you there any faster. It may actually take you longer because you were following to close that you got yourself in an accident. Rule of thumb is that you need to leave one and a half car lengths between you and the car in front of you.

  3. Not letting other vehicles merge is not very nice and won’t get you on Santa’s good list either. And, it can be extremely dangerous if you’re hogging the right lane when others are trying to merge onto the freeway. Let them in.

  4. Turn up the radio, nah turn it down! Not everyone wants to hear what you’re listening to.

  5. Don’t leave your brights on. This can make it extremely hard for oncoming traffic to see which begs me to ask the question of why would you do this?! Use your brights courteously.

  6. Please use your turn signals. They were invented to give other drivers a little heads up so that they can slow down and not end up connecting with the rear of your car because you had to take a quick turn and they had zero response time.

  7. Driving too slowly is as bad as driving too fast. They both are real dangers.

  8. The parking lot is full, but you just could have had a spot if only this person didn’t double park! Just don’t do it.

  9. Sure traffic light may not seem like they are on your side today, but honking at them is not going to change the computers mind. Try to leave a few minutes early as you never know when the traffic sign gods are not on your side.

  10. After a snow storm it is very important to clear as much snow from your vehicle as possible. Why? Because you have the chance of losing all of that snow to the vehicle behind you and causing a lack of vision and possibly an accident for them.

Be a better driver by immediately following these easy drivers etiquette tips today! And if you have something you’d like to share please stop by Freeman Grapevine or post on our facebook wall!

Fall Foliage Drives in North Texas

Being located here in Grapevine, Texas, means that we aren’t exactly a treasure trove of great fall foliage sightseeing. Our weather errs on the warmer side of the spectrum so we very rarely have a window of time to enjoy the changing of the colors. Not to say that we don’t enjoy it, we just have to search a little harder and be a little better at planning ahead. For us, late November, right around Thanksgiving is the best time to take a drive to see the colors. After living here for many years, here are a few places I’ve found that can provide us North Texans with a glimpse of Fall foliage.

Fossil Rim State Park

South of Fort Worth, about an hour’s drive, you’ll hit Glen Rose, a tiny town of about 2,500. In that town is a great park called Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. In that park is a drive thru wildlife and foliage lesson. If you pick the right time of year, you could witness a changing of the colors and see some antelopes, rhinoceroses, giraffes, and plenty of other wildlife. This wooded preserve is a great drive regardless of the time of year, but if you’re a fan of the oranges, reds and yellows that Fall has to offer, then you can’t go wrong at Fossil Rim.

Cedar Hill State Park

Just south of Dallas on I-20 and 1845 near Cedar Hill is Joe Pool Lake. A small lake that is surrounded by wooded areas, a preserve and plenty of opportunities to catch some fall foliage. Don’t forget your camera because you’ll have tons of chances to capture the essence of Fall. The short drive between I-20 and Cedar Hill alone is worth the drive. Rolling hills, fresh air and plenty of trees are the highlight. Just thinking about it is making me itch to take a trip down there!

Tyler State Park

East of Dallas, about 2 hours of driving, is Tyler State Park. A small, wooded state park that surrounds a lake. This is the perfect place to spend a cool, Fall weekend and enjoy the outdoors. You can bring an, RV, pitch a tent or stay in one of their screened cabins. Either way, you’ll have the perfect vantage point to see tons of colorful Fall changes. The drive out to East Texas isn’t too bad itself. Once you get out of DFW, it’s nothing but trees for miles.

What about you? Where are some of your favorite places to enjoy Fall foliage in North Texas?

Have You Heard Of The Elio?

Check this out! I saw a friend of mine post an article about this car/motorcycle hybrid called the Elio. I think it’s a pretty neat idea, especially in a world where Smart cars are available. It looks like a good alternative to gas guzzlers. On their website it shows that they get 84 miles per gallon and cost less than $7,000!

I bet it would be super fun to drive, almost like driving a go-kart to work every day. If their specs are right, then it can go from 0-60 in 9 seconds, which isn’t very fast. Then again, when driving to work, you don’t ever hit 60 anyways.

With an 8 Gallon tank, you can conceivably drive 672 miles without filling up your gas tank. You could make it from our headquarters here in Grapevine to Albuquerque on one tank of gas. That’s pretty amazing.

Best of all, they’d all be made right here in America. When production starts on these little 3-wheelers, it’ll be based in Shreveport, LA. As of June 22, 2014, there are already 22,000 pre-orders for them!

I realize that by looking at the picture above, you’re probably thinking that it can’t be a safe drive. According to their research, it actually is. Take a look at this video and see for yourself.

What do you think about the Elio? Would you drive one?

Main Street Days Are Finally Here!

Living here in Grapevine, it’s easy to head to Fort Worth or Dallas for the many art and music festivals they have throughout the year. Grapevine has a pretty good one too! About a block away from our dealership, there’s the best one of all. This weekend (May 16,17 & 18), Main Street Days is finally here and I’m ready to get out there and drink some of the wine, listen to the music, check out the art and take home some of the craft beers. Main Street Days is such a fun time for me, since I’m a big fan of live music.

This year, it looks to be even bigger than ever! tons of food vendors, wine tasting, craft beer tasting, and of course, plenty for the kids. Don’t forget the Grillin’ Competition, I’ll probably be there taking notes. I’m always looking to up my game on my grill. There’s nothing like a perfectly grilled steak.

The best thing about Main Street Days? It’s the price! It’s only $7 for adults, $5 for kids under 13, free for kids under 5. You can’t even go to the movies for that cheap, and you’ll definitely spend more time and have more fun than you ever would in a movie theater.

You’ll also see a good amount of local artisans and artists. If hand-made is your thing, then you won’t want to miss this.

Happy New Year!

Hey guys and gals! I just wanted to say “Happy New Year!” Did you make any new year’s resolutions? Eating healthy? Working out? Losing weight? What about resolutions for your car? I’ve got a couple of ideas for mine!

1. Take a road trip!

When’s the last time you took a road trip for pleasure? Have you seen the Grand Canyon? South Padre during spring break? Your car is designed to take you places, use it!

2. Put the phone down.

In 2011, 23% of all accidents that happened involved cell phones. That’s a disturbing number and surely, within the past 2 years, that number has gone up. Make it a point to keep your phone in your pocket or in a place that is out of reach while you’re driving. Paying attention while you’re behind the wheel is the best possible thing you could do to avoid an accident.

3. Keep your car maintained.

Changing the fluids in your car and keeping it maintained is the key to getting the longest life possible out of your car. Is your car well-maintained enough to hit 300,000 miles? Get the full value of your car and start keeping a log book of the maintenance that has been performed to make sure you don’t miss a scheduled oil change or have to pay up for repairs that could have been avoided.

4. Get that headlight fixed!

There are plenty of cars out on the road that need a little TLC. A blown-out light bulb can get you a ticket, bald tires will stop you from getting your car inspected, a busted out window increases the chance of someone breaking into your car (again!).  If there’s only a handful of things stopping you from be safe on the road, get them fixed and let’s start off the new year as safely as possible.

What about you? What are your new year’s resolutions?

A Lesson in Trip Planning from UPS

No Left TurnUPS delivers packages, everyone knows that. But what you may not know is that the drivers of over 95,000 trucks have plotted their routes to minimize the number of left turns they make. How many times have you sat at an intersection and waited for a few minutes while traffic passes you by? To the UPS drivers, that’s time and gas, both of which amount to money in their pockets. Why am I talking about this, you ask? We’re always looking for ways to save a little money here and there at the gas pump. I’m not saying that eliminating left turns is the way to saving tons of money or will help your children’s college fund, but it can help your car get anywhere from 3-5% better gas mileage. If UPS can shave 28.5 million miles off its delivery routes by planning ahead, maybe we can work it into our daily trips. Another tip you can learn from any kind of delivery driver is to make multiple stops on the same trip. If you need to go more than one place, make it a habit to kill multiple birds with one stone as trips back and forth to your house eat away at your gas tank.

Here’s a Mythbusters video that shows the concept and the results.

If you know of any other off-the-wall ways to save on fuel, find us on Facebook and let us know about them. Our readers would love to hear about them!

Common Car Problems That You Don’t Need to Kick Up a Stink About!

You know you’ve done it!  An indicator light goes on in the instrument panel or you hear a new, strange noise and of course you’re thinking that something must absolutely be wrong with your car and it needs immediate attention! Well relax, take a deep breath and let’s sort through some of the common car problems that you just don’t need to kick up a stink about!  And of course you can also come chat with us at Freeman Grapevine too!

The check engine light goes on and immediately you panic that just maybe, maybe…your car is going to blow up.  Take a deep breath and calm down. More than likely the check engine light is just signaling to you that you need to take your car in for a scheduled mileage maintenance. Usually the check engine light will show up in two colors, amber for non-emergency maintenance and red for you should probably hurry up and get it checked out sooner rather than later. Double check your vehicles manual to be 100% sure though as not all vehicles are the same.

Click. Click. Click. Ohhh, a new sound just sounded. What to do? Again, no need to panic. A lot of noises you hear are things that don’t need to be fussed about and will actually just sort themselves out. Just like how that rock got stuck between tires treads and is making the clicking sound, it will soon work itself out. Or if it’s really driving you crazy you can very carefully do some detective work and try to figure out which tire it is and get it out yourself.

A locked steering wheel and your key won’t turn. They’re not broken. You just need to put a little muscle into really. Seriously, grab the steering wheel and turn it hard in one direction and turn the key. If it’s still not working try the other direction.  But don’t force the key. You don’t want to break it or the ignition as that will be a very costly fix all for nothing. Once you get the steering wheel in the sweet spot the key should turn just as it normally does.

You think you might have a leak. So you just pulled out from your where your car was currently parked only to notice that there’s liquid there that you swear wasn’t there before. First, it really could have been there before and you just like to freak yourself out. Or maybe there is some liquid, but if it’s not a lot then there’s usually nothing really to worry about. In fact, if you’ve been using your AC a lot lately it could just be built up condensation. If you notice a color to the liquid then you may have a coolant leak. This could potentially be a problem so if you suspect it is check your coolant level, but carefully as the car needs to be completely cooled before doing so.

Hopefully those few common car problems mentioned above will help calm your nerves when you’re driving. But if you suspect a problem, please don’t hesitate to contact our service department so that we can get it fixed for you, just contact Freeman Grapevine today!

Should You Tap Your Brakes To Dry Them Out

drum brakes, disc brakes, drying out brakes, freeman grapevine

This is actually a really good question. Growing up, I’m sure that many of us we taught to tap our brakes while stopping in order to dry them out. Especially after plowing through a giant puddle, or cruising through deep water.

However is this old practice still “hold water” today? Have you actually even heard about repeatedly tapping your brakes to dry them out, and if you haven’t, why not? Well, the answer is actually due to a change in the evolution of the modern day braking system on most new cars.

The tapping of your brakes was actually a wise practice back in the days when most cars had drum brakes, but today’s vehicles are now be equipped with disc on all four wheels. Centrifugal force causes the vertical surface of a brake disc to shed moisture quickly, whereas water would collect on the horizontal surfaces of a brake drum and interfere with braking efficiency.

Check out the video below for a great tutorial on how disc brakes work:

However, if you think you are experiencing problems with your braking system and believe  that you need to have pads changed out, or at the very least, have any basic service performed to your brakiing system, don’t hesitate to give Freeman Grapevine a call.

We put a lot of faith in our brakes, so you are better off making sure they are in perfect working order if you believe your vehicle isn’t responding to your braking as it should.

What kind of “terrible” driver are you?

terrible driver, car in pool, worst drivers, grapevine cars, gmc fort worth, dealerships dfw, buick dealer, GMC dealer, used cars dfw, used cars fort worthI know we all think that we are the best drivers on the planet, that we never make a mistake, that it’s always the other guy’s fault; but let’s be honest, we can be as bad as the worst driver on his worst day. We all get a little too comfortable behind the wheel sometimes, so I’ve listed a few types of terrible drivers I tend to see on the road. Which one are you?

(1) The Time Waster – You know this guy. You’re waiting to make a right turn and he’s coming down the street and instead of using his blinker to let you know he’s turning before you – you sit there and waste time not knowing what he’s going to do.

(2) Traffic Weavers – Why bother with all the lane changes when you’re only gaining one or two car lengths. You’re cutting people off and making us very irritated. I think it’s funny when someone is driving behind you and they think they can get ahead of you so they change lanes to get around you but get stuck behind someone going slower than you. I laugh so hard at this.

(3) Light Turns Green And Nothing – HELLOOOOO GOOOO!!!

(4) The No Reason Passer – If you’re going to pass me then you better not start driving slower than I am. What’s the point of that?

(5) I’m Officially Blind – Ok, I got it Mr. I Drive the Tallest Truck I Can. You win. I have been clinically blinded by your headlights. I give up.

(6) The Snail / The Bullet – I think this pretty much sums it up,  ”Have you ever noticed that anyone driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?” – George Carlin

(7) Widespread Panic – Ok look, I’ve given you plenty of room to get over in front of me, what are you so afraid of? I’ve seen hamsters be more aggressive.

(8) Oh Will You Look At That – Was it imperative that you take a quick few second look at that poor guy being pulled over by the police. You’ve backed up traffic for miles. Eyes forward FOCUS!

(9) The Permanent Blinker – You must be a real treat. You’ve just given more than one person on the road a complete psychotic breakdown as they are driving. Way to go!

(10) The Ones That Enter The Parking Lot – And then proceed to drive at the pace of a turtle. It’s ok to go faster than 2 mph. Trust me.

Although terrible driving may seem inevitable…RESIST!!! DON’T BE THAT GUY!
