GMC Takes Heavy Duty Further Off-Road with First-Ever Sierra HD AT4X and Extreme AEV Edition

2023-05-01

  • Enhanced off-road capability matched with available 18,500-pound max trailering1
  • Offers the most trailering tech in its class2 and first-class luxury features
  • Specialized AEV Edition offers extreme capability and confidence off-road

DETROIT – GMC first elevated key off-road truck segments with the premium and capable Sierra 1500 AT4X and Canyon AT4X. Today, GMC announced the next step with the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X — featuring the Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition — a truck that enables adventurers to go further while still having the towing capability essential for heavy duty haulers.

The Sierra HD AT4X bolsters GMC’s lineup of premium off-road trucks, balancing increased off-road capability, smooth on-road handling, offering the most trailering technology in its class2 and first-class luxury and comfort features.

“GMC’s AT4X trim, which will be available across the entire GMC truck lineup, offers customers more premium choices when it comes to ‘do-it-all’ capabilities,” said Duncan Aldred, global vice president, Buick-GMC. “Each model delivers unique strengths, with the all-new Sierra HD AT4X taking it to the max, giving our customers the most luxurious and most off-road capable HD we’ve ever offered. AT4X means you can conquer almost any terrain, in complete comfort and with the towing power to bring your recreational toys, gear or camper along for the adventure.”

AT4X: Premium off-roading the GMC way

Building on the foundation of the revamped 2024 Sierra HD, which receives fresh design updates, new available premium interiors and an all-new tech-focused layout, the new Sierra HD AT4X’s highlights include:

  • Available 18,500-pound max trailering capacity1
  • Factory-installed 1.5-inch (38mm) suspension lift
  • Multimatic DSSV dampers
  • Rear e-locking differential
  • 35-inch Goodyear Territory tires
  • Specific front upper and lower control arms and specific steering knuckles
  • Larger steel transfer case skid plate and front aluminum skid plate
  • Unique Obsidian Rush interior featuring premium appointments like massaging, full-grain leather-wrapped front seats

The Sierra HD AT4X also includes a new Off-Road Mode. When engaged, the Off-Road Mode adjusts various vehicle calibrations, such as the anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control, to provide optimized performance when venturing off-road. Additionally, Off-Road Mode alters throttle progression and transmission shifts to allow for better off-road control and performance.

Extreme AEV Edition

The available AT4X AEV Edition adds robust stamped steel bumpers with integrated recovery points and front winch capability which provide additional driver confidence and protection. It also features heavy duty steel skid plates that help keep vital components such as the steering gear and transfer case protected on the trail. Additional features include unique 18-inch Salta wheels and unique exterior badging and interior cues.

“The Sierra HD is an ideal foundation when it comes to on-road performance, off-road capability and insane pulling power,” said AEV CEO and founder Dave Harriton. “As with the Sierra 1500 before it, we took AEV’s signature performance-driven approach and dedication to detail to elevate the aspects that off-road customers want and demand in their heavy-duty truck. The result is an awesome truck with capability and confidence in all the right spots.”

Heavy Duty capability: Turbocharged pulling power

In addition to the standard 6.6L gas engine, the new AT4X offers the turbocharged pulling power of the available 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel. Enhanced for 2024, it will deliver 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque, offering more power across the entire operating speed range.

Both engines are paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, which is designed to optimize engine power, torque and efficiency.

Confidence-inspiring trailering tech

Along with the rest of the 2024 Sierra HD lineup, the new AT4X offers the most trailering assistance technologies in the heavy-duty class2 as well as the available ProGrade Trailering System.

It includes a suite of available intelligent assistance technologies designed to help streamline the hitching and towing process, with integrated tools that can help enhance customers’ safety and confidence, including available enhanced, industry-first Transparent Trailer Viewfor Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Trailering, available Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert5 and new, available Adaptive Cruise Control5 with Trailering.

Additionally, there are up to 14 available camera views6 including Hitch View, Bed View with Zoom and Bed Hitch Guidance, and Rear Side View with Trailer Length Indicator.

The AEV Edition also features the AEV logo on the front-seat head restraints and unique AEV-branded floor liners.

The centerpiece of the new cabin is an all-new, tablet-style 13.4-inch-diagonal infotainment3 touchscreen. It is complemented by a 12.3-inch-diagonal configurable driver information center and a 15-inch-diagonal head-up display. Together, they provide customers incredible levels of personalization and intuitive engagement.

2023-04-21

  • GM-estimated up to 355 mile electric range on a full charge for 3X Pickup1
  • EPA-estimated 314 mile electric range on a full charge for 3X SUV8

DETROIT – GMC began its electric revolution with the introduction of the GMC HUMMER EV Pickup, the world’s first all-electric supertruck, which is now joined by the GMC HUMMER EV SUV. These two vehicles – each with a distinct personality – build upon GMC’s promise of delivering the premium, capable and precisely crafted vehicles that customers have come to expect from the brand. Today, GMC released new specifications for the 2023 HUMMER EV Pickup and the 2024 GMC HUMMER EV SUV, including the 3X trim for both models of the supertruck.

“GMC has long been a leader in professional-grade trucks and the GMC HUMMER EV continues to rock the establishment, setting new standards in technology, capability, and maneuverability,” said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer, GMC HUMMER EV. “Our unwavering goal was to develop an off-road capable supertruck right from the factory and we’re excited to show the world what 100-plus years of vehicle development2 know-how can do when applied to EV power.”

With segment-defining features like standard 4 Wheel Steer, CrabWalk3 and Watts to Freedom4 on the Edition 1 and the 3X trim for both Pickup and SUV, the GMC HUMMER EV lineup has reimagined what is possible for an electric vehicle, with blistering on-road performance coupled with authentic off-road capability.

2023 GMC HUMMER EV Pickup

The 2023 GMC HUMMER EV Pickup brings with it the continuation of the all-inclusive Edition 1 trim and the debut of the 3X trim, which will offer customers more choice to customize their truck.

The 3X trim will come standard with 22-inch wheels and 35-inch All-Terrain tires that offer a sportier, more on-road-oriented driving dynamic. In this configuration, customers can expect a GM-estimated driving range of up to 355 miles on a full charge1, allowing them to take their electric supertruck journey even further.

For those that want to head off the beaten path, the 3X trim will also offer the Extreme Off-Road Package, which includes additional underbody cameras5, additional skid plates and rocker protection with built-in assist steps, as well as 18-inch wheels and 35-inch Mud-Terrain tires. This configuration will offer a GM-estimated driving range of up to 329 miles on a full charge6, the same as the Edition 1 Pickup.

Go Further: GMC Expands Capability of 2024 Sierra 1500 AT4X with Addition of Rugged and Refined 3.0L Duramax Engine

The powerful yet sophisticated Duramax engine, first introduced to the Sierra stable for the 2023 model year, delivers increased power and torque for world-class on- and off-road capability in the AT4X.

2023-04-05

DETROIT – GMC announced today that it will make the rugged and refined second-generation 3.0L inline-six Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine standard on its extreme off-road Sierra 1500 AT4X trim, allowing customers to go further and explore more in their off-road adventures.

First introduced on select 2023 Sierra 1500 trims, the updated 3.0L Duramax engine comes standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission and delivers max power of 305 horsepower (a 10% increase compared to MY22), and max torque of 495 lb-ft (a 7.6% increase from MY22).

“The 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine has long been a favorite of Sierra light duty owners,” said Will Mellon, marketing manager, GMC Sierra. “Since the launch of the refined Duramax for the 2023 model year, around 20% of all Sierra 1500s sold have come with the engine and we expect its addition to the AT4X trim to take mix even higher.”

The Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine’s advancements are made possible through several key component upgrades, including:

  • New steel pistons with a revised combustion bowl
  • Retuned turbo compressor
  • New fuel injectors
  • Improved temperature control features

“These refinements of the 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine took an already awesome engine and made it even better for off-road applications,” said John Barta, GM assistant chief engineer, Diesel Engines. “The outstanding low-end torque combined with the smooth and quiet power of this diesel engine, make it ideal for customers requiring on-road capability for things like towing, as well as off-road adventures like long-distance overlanding.”

The Duramax engine will continue to be assembled at GM’s Flint Engine Operations plant in Michigan1 and will be available on the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X later this summer.

With advanced off-road capability, premium technology and an exclusive, luxuriously appointed interior, the Sierra 1500 AT4X allows customers to venture further off-road with confidence and in comfort. Standard features such as Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear e-locking differentials, combined with the additional capability of the available AEV edition, make this the most off-road capable factory Sierra 1500 ever. All with the luxury-focused and tech-infused AT4X Obsidian Rush interior, which features full grain leather-wrapped massaging front seats, authentic ash wood trim, a 12-speaker Bose® Premium Series audio system and more than 40 diagonal inches of combined digital displays.

The 2024 model year also brings additional new features across the Sierra 1500 lineup, including:

  • New power retractable assist steps on Denali, Denali Ultimate, AT4 and AT4X

GMC and EarthCruiser Collaborate to Shape the Future of Overlanding

GMC and EarthCruiser Collaborate to Shape the Future of Overlanding

Brands plan to combine GMC’s world-class reputation for designing and building premium off-road EV trucks and SUVs with EarthCruiser’s proven overland vehicle and global field expertise to create an overlanding upfit solution that is integrated onto a GMC HUMMER EV Pickup, allowing customers to explore the world in a new way.

2023-03-30

DETROIT — GMC and EarthCruiser Overland Vehicles are teaming up to help shape the future of overlanding with focused product development and innovative technologies that will provide zero-tailpipe-emission solutions to the overlanding arena. These two iconic brands share a vision for an electric future, while inspiring customers to get out and see all that the world has to offer in a truck and overlanding solution that they can trust.

Working with EarthCruiser’s research and design division, ECI (EarthCruiser Innovations), and informed by their extensive experience in the field, GMC is collaborating in the design and development process for a next-generation overland upfit solution for electric vehicles that will be integrated onto the HUMMER EV Pickup.

GMC offers purpose-built vehicles designed and engineered to the highest standard. In 2019, the brand took its expertise in the premium off-roading space to new levels with the introduction of the AT4 sub-brand, followed by the launch of the ultra-capable Sierra AT4X in 2022. GMC then introduced the most advanced off-road midsize truck with the Canyon AT4X1.

GMC believes in an all-electric future and its commitment in this space is no exception. In 2020, the brand revealed the HUMMER EV Pickup, the world’s first all-electric supertruck, followed quickly by the HUMMER EV SUV in 20212. Most recently, GMC revealed the Sierra EV Denali3, making it the first and only brand with three all-electric truck offerings.

“GMC has long been a leader in professional-grade trucks with 100-plus years of uncompromising pickup capability, luxury and driver control,” said Josh Tavel, GM executive chief engineer, Battery Electric Trucks. “We had an instant connection with EarthCruiser — a leader in the overland community — and their similar vision to accelerate the zero-tailpipe-emissions future. EarthCruiser products have proven their performance in environments around the world and we’re excited to join them on this next chapter of adventure and exploration.”

This collaboration will look to leverage EarthCruiser’s renowned engineering expertise in the overland and off-road vehicle development space, proven through its successful lineup of EC Terranova, EarthCruiser EXP and FX overland vehicles, as well as their CORE line. GMC and EarthCruiser have come together in their shared vision to develop top-tier, zero-compromise adventure vehicles, leveraging EarthCruiser’s engineering technologies that have resulted in unique and innovative self-contained living habitats, while keeping capability and agility at the forefront.

“EarthCruiser designs its vehicles to thrive in the most extreme, toughest environments imaginable,” said EarthCruiser CEO/Founder Lance Gillies. “From the Australian Outback to the Alaskan wilderness and everywhere in between, an EarthCruiser was made to tackle tough terrain. As we consider the future of overlanding, we are continuing to look toward key technologies like electrification that will help us explore for decades to come. Electrification presents exciting opportunities for overland use, such as precise torque control over terrain and ease-of-use, in addition to zero-tailpipe emissions. We’re thrilled to be working with GM’s team of top-tier EV engineers and look to develop an overland vehicle that’s truly made for, and will define, the future of this industry.”

The GMC HUMMER EV overlander concept will be unveiled in late summer 2023.

Scottsdale, Ariz. – Tread Lightly!, a non-profit dedicated to promoting outdoor recreation through stewardship and educational programs, will receive $500,000 from the sale of the first production unit of the 2024 GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 SUV at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction on Jan. 28, 2023. The non-profit will receive the full amount raised for the GMC HUMMER EV SUV, as Barrett-Jackson waived the fees and commissions typically associated with their collector vehicle auctions.

“We’re proud to support Tread Lightly! and their mission through the monumental sale of VIN 001 of the GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 SUV at Barrett-Jackson,” said Duncan Aldred, global vice president of Buick and GMC. “We’re honored to start the year off with this donation to a great cause. Tread Lightly!’s goal is to balance the needs of the people who enjoy outdoor recreation with the need to maintain healthy ecosystems and thriving populations of wildlife across the nation. Funds from the first retail unit of the GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 SUV will be used to support its conservation mission as well as promote outdoor ethics and a sense of good stewardship in nature.

“We can’t thank the GMC brand and Barrett-Jackson enough for this amazing support,” said Matt Caldwell, Executive Director of Tread Lightly! “This funding will make numerous trail restorations projects and educational programs possible in areas across the country. These projects are at the heartbeat of what we do as we work to ‘protect the adventure’ for everyone.”
