I-95 bridge reopens, less than two weeks after tanker explosion [UPDATE]

The Interstate 95 bridge in Philadelphia destroyed by a tanker explosion less than two weeks ago reopened to traffic in the noon hour today (Friday), with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro presiding over a press conference this morning and workers putting final touches on a temporary span.

Construction of a permanent replacement bridge to get traffic flowing again on the East Coast’s main north-south highway is expected to take months, so the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) elected to construct temporary lanes in both directions to allow traffic to return to the freeway while work on the adjacent span is underway.

PennDOT created an information portal on its website for updates on the repair efforts. On Thursday evening, the agency posted an update saying that travel restrictions on streets surrounding the overpass should lift on Friday as three temporary lanes will open in each direction on I-95. The new lanes are in place, and PennDOT finalized median and barrier placement this morning before allowing traffic to re-enter the interstate. Temporary repair efforts were hampered this week by wet weather, which made curing asphalt and applying lane markings difficult. Pocono Raceway and NASCAR stepped up, providing one of its jet dryer trucks to aid in drying the surface.

The bridge collapsed early on June 11 after a fatal gasoline tanker truck crash started a massive blaze beneath the bridge that thoroughly compromised its structure. State transportation officials said the driver, who was killed, lost control around a curve. There were no other deaths or injuries.

The closure of an important commercial artery snarled traffic in and around Philadelphia and forced cars and trucks to detour around the area. State and federal officials pledged quick action to minimize the economic impact and inconvenience.

To get I-95 operating again as quickly as possible, workers used about 2,000 tons (1,814 metric tons) of lightweight glass nuggets to fill the underpass and bring it up to surface level, then paved over to create three lanes of travel in each direction.

The 24-hour construction work was live-streamed, drawing thousands of viewers online.

President Joe Biden joined Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on a helicopter tour of the site a little more than a week after the collapse and praised the design as “incredibly innovative in order to get this work done in record time.’’

“Based on the tremendous progress these crews made over the weekend and the time it takes to complete the remaining steps, I can now say that we will have I-95 back open this weekend,” Shapiro said Tuesday afternoon. “We have worked around the clock to get this done, and we’ve completed each phase safely and ahead of schedule. That’s all due to the incredible coordination with our local, state, and federal partners – and thanks to the hard-working men and women of the Philadelphia Building Trades who are making this happen.”

Permanent repairs are projected to take months with an estimated cost of at least $30 million, PennDOT said.

The Philadelphia disaster echoed a similar situation in Atlanta, where an elevated portion of Interstate 85 collapsed in a fire, shutting down the heavily traveled route through the heart of the city in March 2017. It took authorities there 43 days to replace it.

In Oakland, California, a collapsed highway ramp was replaced in 26 days. And an I-5 bridge in Washington state collapsed in 2013 when an oversize truck hit a bridge truss; cars and their occupants were thrown in the Skagit River, but no one died. Two temporary prefabricated structures were put in place and the interstate reopened in 27 days.

GMC Takes Heavy Duty Further Off-Road with First-Ever Sierra HD AT4X and Extreme AEV Edition

2023-05-01

  • Enhanced off-road capability matched with available 18,500-pound max trailering1
  • Offers the most trailering tech in its class2 and first-class luxury features
  • Specialized AEV Edition offers extreme capability and confidence off-road

DETROIT – GMC first elevated key off-road truck segments with the premium and capable Sierra 1500 AT4X and Canyon AT4X. Today, GMC announced the next step with the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X — featuring the Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition — a truck that enables adventurers to go further while still having the towing capability essential for heavy duty haulers.

The Sierra HD AT4X bolsters GMC’s lineup of premium off-road trucks, balancing increased off-road capability, smooth on-road handling, offering the most trailering technology in its class2 and first-class luxury and comfort features.

“GMC’s AT4X trim, which will be available across the entire GMC truck lineup, offers customers more premium choices when it comes to ‘do-it-all’ capabilities,” said Duncan Aldred, global vice president, Buick-GMC. “Each model delivers unique strengths, with the all-new Sierra HD AT4X taking it to the max, giving our customers the most luxurious and most off-road capable HD we’ve ever offered. AT4X means you can conquer almost any terrain, in complete comfort and with the towing power to bring your recreational toys, gear or camper along for the adventure.”

AT4X: Premium off-roading the GMC way

Building on the foundation of the revamped 2024 Sierra HD, which receives fresh design updates, new available premium interiors and an all-new tech-focused layout, the new Sierra HD AT4X’s highlights include:

  • Available 18,500-pound max trailering capacity1
  • Factory-installed 1.5-inch (38mm) suspension lift
  • Multimatic DSSV dampers
  • Rear e-locking differential
  • 35-inch Goodyear Territory tires
  • Specific front upper and lower control arms and specific steering knuckles
  • Larger steel transfer case skid plate and front aluminum skid plate
  • Unique Obsidian Rush interior featuring premium appointments like massaging, full-grain leather-wrapped front seats

The Sierra HD AT4X also includes a new Off-Road Mode. When engaged, the Off-Road Mode adjusts various vehicle calibrations, such as the anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control, to provide optimized performance when venturing off-road. Additionally, Off-Road Mode alters throttle progression and transmission shifts to allow for better off-road control and performance.

Extreme AEV Edition

The available AT4X AEV Edition adds robust stamped steel bumpers with integrated recovery points and front winch capability which provide additional driver confidence and protection. It also features heavy duty steel skid plates that help keep vital components such as the steering gear and transfer case protected on the trail. Additional features include unique 18-inch Salta wheels and unique exterior badging and interior cues.

“The Sierra HD is an ideal foundation when it comes to on-road performance, off-road capability and insane pulling power,” said AEV CEO and founder Dave Harriton. “As with the Sierra 1500 before it, we took AEV’s signature performance-driven approach and dedication to detail to elevate the aspects that off-road customers want and demand in their heavy-duty truck. The result is an awesome truck with capability and confidence in all the right spots.”

Heavy Duty capability: Turbocharged pulling power

In addition to the standard 6.6L gas engine, the new AT4X offers the turbocharged pulling power of the available 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel. Enhanced for 2024, it will deliver 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque, offering more power across the entire operating speed range.

Both engines are paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, which is designed to optimize engine power, torque and efficiency.

Confidence-inspiring trailering tech

Along with the rest of the 2024 Sierra HD lineup, the new AT4X offers the most trailering assistance technologies in the heavy-duty class2 as well as the available ProGrade Trailering System.

It includes a suite of available intelligent assistance technologies designed to help streamline the hitching and towing process, with integrated tools that can help enhance customers’ safety and confidence, including available enhanced, industry-first Transparent Trailer Viewfor Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Trailering, available Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert5 and new, available Adaptive Cruise Control5 with Trailering.

2023-04-21

  • GM-estimated up to 355 mile electric range on a full charge for 3X Pickup1
  • EPA-estimated 314 mile electric range on a full charge for 3X SUV8

DETROIT – GMC began its electric revolution with the introduction of the GMC HUMMER EV Pickup, the world’s first all-electric supertruck, which is now joined by the GMC HUMMER EV SUV. These two vehicles – each with a distinct personality – build upon GMC’s promise of delivering the premium, capable and precisely crafted vehicles that customers have come to expect from the brand. Today, GMC released new specifications for the 2023 HUMMER EV Pickup and the 2024 GMC HUMMER EV SUV, including the 3X trim for both models of the supertruck.

“GMC has long been a leader in professional-grade trucks and the GMC HUMMER EV continues to rock the establishment, setting new standards in technology, capability, and maneuverability,” said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer, GMC HUMMER EV. “Our unwavering goal was to develop an off-road capable supertruck right from the factory and we’re excited to show the world what 100-plus years of vehicle development2 know-how can do when applied to EV power.”

With segment-defining features like standard 4 Wheel Steer, CrabWalk3 and Watts to Freedom4 on the Edition 1 and the 3X trim for both Pickup and SUV, the GMC HUMMER EV lineup has reimagined what is possible for an electric vehicle, with blistering on-road performance coupled with authentic off-road capability.

2023 GMC HUMMER EV Pickup

The 2023 GMC HUMMER EV Pickup brings with it the continuation of the all-inclusive Edition 1 trim and the debut of the 3X trim, which will offer customers more choice to customize their truck.

In this configuration, customers can expect a GM-estimated driving range of up to 355 miles on a full charge1, allowing them to take their electric supertruck journey even further.

For those that want to head off the beaten path, the 3X trim will also offer the Extreme Off-Road Package, which includes additional underbody cameras5, additional skid plates and rocker protection with built-in assist steps, as well as 18-inch wheels and 35-inch Mud-Terrain tires.
