Chevy and GMC Plan 2027 Redesigns for Silverado and Sierra; PHEVs Possible

  • Chevrolet and GMC plan full redesigns of Silverado and Sierra pickups for the 2027 model year.

  • Plug-in hybrid variants could join gasoline and EV offerings as GM expands powertrain diversity.

  • Redesign follows strong sales and added U.S. production capacity for full-size pickup models.

Chevrolet and GMC will redesign their light-duty full-size pickups, the Silverado and Sierra, in 2027, with General Motors evaluating plug-in hybrid variants for future production. Heavy-duty versions of both models are expected to follow in 2028.

GM to Move Truck Production to Michigan, Idles Mexico Plant as Part of Evolving Strategy

The update is part of GM’s evolving product strategy, which recently completed a wave of crossover and SUV updates and added new electric vehicle offerings. Chevrolet and GMC have seen increased U.S. sales volume in 2025, including a record first half for GMC and Chevrolet’s strongest performance since 2019.

Strong demand for full-size pickups and large SUVs has prompted General Motors to plan additional manufacturing capacity in the U.S. GM confirmed it will add production of the Silverado and Sierra nameplates at its Orion Township, Michigan, plant in 2027. Relatedly, Chevrolet and GMC refreshed the Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon SUVs in 2024. This should lead to complete redesigns, planned for 2029, with potential plug-in hybrid options, mirroring the pickups.

The company has not announced timelines to phase out internal combustion engines, choosing instead to expand EV availability while retaining gasoline and potentially hybrid options. The plug-in hybrid strategy could help bridge the gap in consumer interest in electrification as demand for EVs moderates.

In addition to the Silverado and Sierra redesigns, electric variants of the pickups, the Silverado EV and Sierra EV, could receive updates around 2028. Both electric models have added new trims, including off-road and base-level configurations.

Chevrolet and GMC have been expanding their product portfolios with redesigns and freshenings across several segments. Notable updates include the 2024 launches of the redesigned Equinox and Terrain compact crossovers and new generations of the Traverse and Acadia three-row models. The redesigned Bolt will enter production by the end of 2025 – spy shots can be found online.

Chevy’s entry-level Trax subcompact crossover, which debuted in 2023, remains a key volume model in 2025 in the U.S., ranking as the brand’s third-highest seller. Like the Trailblazer, it is built in South Korea and subject to U.S. import tariffs under current policy. In Canada, the Traverse has seen a 100% increase in sales in Q2 2025 versus Q2 2024.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Z71 Review: Stylish, Practical, and Noisy Family SUV

GM has also extended the lifecycle of its gasoline-powered Express and Savana commercial vans through at least 2026. New electric commercial vans under the BrightDrop name were rebranded as Chevrolet models in 2024, although sales have remained underwhelming.

While Chevrolet has ended production of the Camaro, a new sporty sedan is being considered for 2028, although details remain limited. Based on the current state of EV adoption in the U.S. and sedans, it seems like this one won’t make the cut.

GM to Move Truck Production to Michigan, Idles Mexico Plant as Part of Evolving Strategy

  • GM will build Silverado, Sierra, and Escalade at Orion Assembly in Michigan from 2027 onward.

  • Production pauses at GM’s Silao, Mexico truck plant extend across July and August.

  • Pickup trucks remain GM’s top U.S. sellers, driving manufacturing strategy shifts.

General Motors plans to build its Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and Cadillac Escalade models at Orion Assembly in Michigan starting in 2027. The production plant was previously intended for electric vehicles but is now earmarked for gasoline-powered models.

The GMC Sierra EV Lineup Gains AT4 and Elevation Trims for 2026

The automaker confirmed on July 15 that Orion Assembly, located about 55 kilometres north of Detroit, will produce the full-size pickups and SUVs. The decision came after GM’s recent announcement of a $4 billion investment to expand internal combustion vehicle manufacturing across three U.S. plants, including Orion, Fairfax Assembly in Kansas and Spring Hill Manufacturing in Tennessee.

In a statement, GM said the additional Michigan production would help meet ongoing demand for pickups and SUVs, while also reinforcing its manufacturing presence in the state and country.

At the same time, GM’s assembly complex in Silao, Mexico — the site building Silverado and Sierra trucks — is undergoing several weeks of downtime. The plant was paused for the first two weeks of July and is scheduled to halt operations again the weeks of August 4 and 11, according to two people familiar with the matter. GM described these shutdowns as part of routine efforts to optimize production, though multiple weeks of idling is uncommon for facilities assembling high-volume pickup models.

2025 GMC Sierra | Photo: GMC

Beyond Silao, GM manufactures Silverado and Sierra trucks in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Flint, Michigan and Ontario. The Escalade continues production in Arlington, Texas, alongside the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and GMC Yukon.

Orion Assembly, which has been largely idle since late 2023, was initially expected to begin building electric Silverado and Sierra pickups. Those plans were delayed twice before GM redirected the site to bolster output of gasoline-powered trucks. The plant currently employs about 200 people producing battery modules for EVs built at GM’s Factory Zero in Detroit.

The Silverado and Sierra remain GM’s most popular vehicles in North America.

2026 GMC Acadia Price Increases Come With New Colors

Acadia Up To $1,600 Pricier

The new GMC Acadia arrived in 2023 as a larger vehicle with more length, height, and cargo capacity. For 2026, the only thing that will be getting bigger is the price, according to order guide data uncovered by CarsDirect. The publication reports that the luxury SUV will now start at $43,700 (excluding $1,495 for destination) in base Elevation form, an increase of $700 over the 2025 sticker. The other two trims in the range, however, get heftier raises of $900 on the mid-level model and $1,600 on the range-topper.

Price Increases Come With Minor Updates

The mid-range AT4 model now starts at $52,300, while the epitome of luxury in the range, the Denali, costs $55,700, representing an increase of 2.96%. These adjustments are not unusual for an annual pricing update, and to soften the blow, they don’t arrive alone, with a new key card now being standard and a pair of new paint options – Glacier White Tricoat and Riverstone Metallic – joining the palette. The former costs $1,095 on the Sierra EV and the Terrain, while the latter is no more than $495, so we expect the same prices for the Acadia.

Buyers not swayed by the appeal of the GMC badge may wish to consider the Chevrolet Traverse, which is very similar beneath the skin and starts at $40,995 for the 2025 model year. Of course, that may get a price bump for 2026, too, but it will still offer much of the same at a lower price point.

What Rivals In The Same Segment Cost

The Acadia has plenty of competitors in the midsize SUV segment, even if some of them don’t aspire to quite the same levels of luxury as the GMC brand. Across town is the Ford Explorer, which currently starts at $39,625 for 2025, while Japan’s Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot start at $43,630 and $40,200, respectively. There’s also the Kia Telluride to consider, which starts at $36,390. This will likely become more expensive for the 2026 model, which will bring with it numerous changes, but we still expect it to remain competitive.

2025 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition Gallery: See GMC’s Premium Off-Road Brawler in Photos

The 2025 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition is built to handle the rough stuff, but it looks sharp doing it. With its wide, planted stance, bold grille, and no-nonsense detailing, it shows up ready for the trail. Let’s take a look at what makes it stand out.

1

The front of the 2025 GMC Canyon AT4X commands attention with a bold grille that asserts the truck’s presence on the trail. Sharp LED headlights frame it, giving a modern, aggressive look.

2

The AEV Edition (American Expedition Vehicles Edition) is a specialized package that upgrades the AT4X with distinct, branded steel bumpers, robust skid plates, unique wheels, and specific badging, among other off-road features.

3

Its factory lift provides increased ground clearance and 17-inch wheels with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler mud-terrain tires for superior traction and durability. Dark fender flares protect the body while accommodating the larger tires.

4

A closer look at the truck’s wheels—they are AEV-exclusive, finished in gloss black, and beadlock capable.

5

The AT4X AEV Edition rides on Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers. Instead of basic shims, these use precision spool valves to adapt on the fly. On the road, this allows the truck to feel surprisingly refined; off-road, it soaks up big hits like a champ.

6

The truck comes loaded with an advanced camera offering a 360-degree bird’s-eye view with up to ten different angles and even underbody cameras that let you play your own spotter off-road. There’s Hitch View and Hitch Guidance for towing, and it’s all run through the large touchscreen with wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, and Google built-in.

7

From the plush upholstery accented with contrasting stitching to the red-trimmed air vent and “AT4X” branding that reinforces its top-tier off-road pedigree, the truck’s interior successfully strikes a balance between luxurious design and rugged functionality.

8

The dash layout feels purpose-built with an 11.3-inch touchscreen and a crisp 8-inch digital gauge display front and center. The multi-function steering wheel gives you easy access to key controls without taking your hands off the wheel or eyes off the road. It’s all angled toward the driver in a way that actually makes sense.

9

All Canyons, including the  AT4X EV Edition, feature a turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four engine, delivering a more than respectable 310 horses and 430 pound-ft of torque. It mates  with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

10

All Canyon trims come with a four-door cab and a 5.5-foot bed, with your choice of rear- or four-wheel drive. Towing tops out at a best-in-class 7,700 pounds.

GM Back in Legal Trouble Over Car Theft Vulnerabilities

Legal Heat Coming to Michigan Over Car Thefts

In recent years, automakers have been the target of mounting legal scrutiny over product defects that pose safety or security risks. Hyundai and Kia faced nationwide backlash and lawsuits after design flaws made their cars exceptionally easy to steal.

Now, General Motors is facing similar heat. A newly filed class action lawsuit claims GM knowingly sold vehicles with easily hackable keyless entry systems – technology that allegedly allows criminals to steal cars in under 30 seconds using cheap signal-cloning devices.

Filed in the Eastern District of Texas, the case centers around popular Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac models produced from 2010 to the present, accusing GM of ignoring known vulnerabilities in its key fob and ignition systems.

GMC

View the 2 images of this gallery on the
original article

A “Hackable” Keyless Entry System

According to the lawsuit, the core issue lies in how GM’s keyless entry system works. It transmits a low-frequency signal between the vehicle and the key fob. Criminals can intercept this signal using a cloning device – typically no larger than a smartphone – and replay it to the car. Once cloned, the signal allows the thief to unlock and start the vehicle without setting off the alarm.

The affected vehicles are GM’s full-size SUVs and trucks, including the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado; GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL; and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. These models, the suit alleges, also have onboard diagnostic (OBDII) ports that are vulnerable to hacking. With inexpensive gear, thieves can reprogram new key fobs in minutes and drive away undetected.

The plaintiff in this latest case, Jeremy Burkett, claims his 2016 GMC Sierra was stolen directly from his driveway in 2022 without any signs of forced entry. After replacing it with a newer 2023 model featuring the same keyless system, he says he now lives in constant fear of another theft.

Not the First Time GM Has Been Sued Over Key Fob Tech

This isn’t GM’s first brush with lawsuits over its allegedly flawed keyless entry technology. In 2023, the automaker faced another proposed class action involving the 2010–2023 Chevy Camaro. That complaint mirrored the current case, alleging that Camaro key fobs were also susceptible to radio signal interception and cloning.

The previous lawsuit reported a spike in Camaro thefts tied to cloned key fobs. Despite these public alerts and increasing thefts, the suit alleged GM failed to take corrective action, issue a recall, or inform customers of the risk.

Other automakers like Jaguar-Land Rover have begun implementing ultra-wideband protection to defend against these types of “relay thefts,” yet the lawsuits argue GM continues to do nothing. While there are ways to protect cars from these thefts, both class actions accuse the company of deceptive and fraudulent practices for selling vehicles with known security flaws.

The AT4 extended range produces 625 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque, and the max range delivers 725 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. Range caps at 478 miles.

Sierra EV Denali

2025 GMC Sierra EV Denali

GMC

GMC’s 2026 Sierra EV Denali is available with all three battery options, two interior designs, heated/ventilated seats, and Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance technology. Air Ride Adaptive Suspension, a panoramic fixed glass roof, and 4-Wheel Steer are available options, and the Denali’s nine color choices are the most the model has ever seen. GMC hasn’t yet released powertrain specs for the 2026 Sierra EV Denali’s standard battery, but its extended range and max range batteries produce 645 and 760 horsepower, along with 785 lb-ft of torque. Drivers receive up to 478 miles of range per charge.

Final thoughts

GMC’s new choices within its Sierra EV lineup cater to diverse consumer needs, enabling the automaker to better compete in the rapidly growing premium electric truck market. The AT4 is a standout new addition with its off-road capable design, but the new standard range Elevation makes entering the full-size electric pickup segment slightly more accessible. The 2026 Sierra EV is expected to arrive at dealers this summer.

GM Shares its $4B Factory Plan to Support U.S. Jobs, Future EVs and SUVs

  • GM will invest $4 billion to retool three U.S. plants for EV and gasoline vehicle production.

  • Orion Assembly to restart in 2027, shifting from EV trucks to full-size SUVs and pickups.

  • Fairfax plant to build redesigned Chevy Bolt EV and combustion Equinox alongside Spring Hill’s Blazer.

General Motors will invest nearly $4 billion across three U.S. manufacturing plants to support production of both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and a new generation of lower-cost electric vehicles (EV), the automaker announced on June 10.

The investment, to be distributed over the next two years, will support factory upgrades at Orion Assembly in Michigan, Fairfax Assembly in Kansas, and Spring Hill Manufacturing in Tennessee. GM did not specify how much of the $4 billion will be allocated to each site.

The company stated the funds will allow it to expand its annual vehicle production capacity in the U.S. to more than 2 million units. The strategy supports both its current internal combustion offerings and its long-term electrification goals.

Factory Retooling and Model Realignment

At Orion Assembly, which has been idle since late 2023, GM will shift away from its original plan to build electric pickups and instead manufacture gasoline-powered full-size SUVs and light-duty pickups starting in early 2027. Electric truck production will remain concentrated at GM’s Factory Zero plant in Detroit, which produces the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Hummer EV, and Cadillac Escalade IQ.

The GMC Sierra EV Lineup Gains AT4 and Elevation Trims for 2026

Fairfax Assembly, also undergoing retooling, will resume operations with production of the redesigned Chevrolet Bolt EV and a new internal combustion version of the Chevrolet Equinox. Equinox production is scheduled to begin in mid-2027 and will supplement existing manufacturing at GM’s plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The Bolt EV is expected to re-enter production at the Kansas plant by the end of 2027.

In Tennessee, Spring Hill Manufacturing will take over production of the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Blazer in 2027. This model is currently built in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, where GM also produces the electric version of the Blazer. Spring Hill will also continue building the Cadillac XT5, as well as the electric Lyriq and Vistiq.

These changes coincide with broader adjustments across GM’s North American manufacturing network. The company recently announced increased output of light-duty full-size pickups at its Fort Wayne, Indiana, facility. Meanwhile, it will reduce pickup production at its Oshawa Assembly plant in Ontario, which is a cause for concern.

GM Postpones EV Motor Production at St. Catharines Plant Until 2027

GM cited U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles as a key economic factor affecting its strategy. The company estimates that these tariffs will add $4 billion to $5 billion to its operating costs this year, prompting a revision of its full-year earnings outlook.

GM’s latest investment is part of its strategy to spend between $10 billion and $12 billion annually through 2027 on U.S. factory operations. The company recently allocated $888 million to upgrade its propulsion facility in New York for the next generation of V8 engines.

With these investments, GM aims to provide a range of vehicle options across various propulsion technologies, supported by a diversified manufacturing footprint spanning the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

GM Adds Power, Tech, and Special Editions to the 2026 Hummer EV

The electric supertruck gets a little more super with some choice enhancements for the new model year

“Subtle” was never a word that described any generation of the Hummer. The electrified version doesn’t deviate, weighing in at nearly five tons, making a whopping 1,000 horsepower, and measuring a tremendous 18 feet from tip to tail. Apparently, GM decided that the Hummer EV simply wasn’t crazy enough, juicing the EV with a mixture of special features and added performance that make it even more ludicrous for 2026.

Model year-specific updates range from practical to performative

GM improved the 2026 Hummer EV truck and SUV with some truly cool features. Bidirectional charging is one of the most pragmatic additions, allowing the Hummer EV to charge other EVs or power a home via its own power supplies. It’s a niche, but certainly a useful tool to have. Super Cruise gets a few improvements, too, making small steps forward in how the truck’s radar cruise control tracks vehicles in front of the driver. Smoother integration with Google Maps adds lane-specific guidance, and drivers now have the option of having the truck automatically adjust cruising speed for the posted speed limit. Two new paint colors — Coastal Dune and Auburn Matte — are available, joining new interior colors dubbed Granite Drift and Stealth Eclipse.

Of course, there are a few decidedly more fun changes for the 2026 Hummer EV, too. GM upped the output for the Hummer EV 3X pickup to 1,160 horsepower, an increase of 160 horsepower relative to the 2025 model year. In a comment to Motor1, GM says the bump in performance is exclusive to the body style and was accomplished by “optimization of software and propulsion calibration.” As a result, the truck can now scoot from zero to 60 mph in a manufacturer-estimated 2.8 seconds. That’s two-tenths of a second quicker than the outgoing model. Finally, a Carbon Fiber Edition, available on either body style, joins the lineup. It adds special Magnus Gray matte paint, Velocity Ember upholstery, unique 22-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, black emblems, and some carbon fiber accents.

A new drive mode debuts, and it isn’t limited to just 2026 model year trucks

The 2026 Hummer EV debuts a new King Crab drive mode, a rear-wheel steering mode designed to specifically enhance the truck’s maneuverability in off-road settings. The automaker says that King Crab mode allows the rear wheels to turn “significantly faster” than the front ones, adding to the truck’s off-road versatility. Apparently, GM will push this new drive mode to all GMC Hummer pickup and SUV models on the road via an over-the-air update coming later in the year. King Crab will occupy the “Mystery Mode” button, which GM used to tease “future possibilities.”

Final thoughts

Lots to unpack here, but King Crab being offered to all Hummer EV owners is perhaps the most notable takeaway. It’s a real-world illustration of automotive software’s flexibility and certainly paints a picture of what’s possible in the future. While hardly necessary, more power and a special edition are welcome additions that are certain to entice a steady stream of buyers as the Hummer EV ages. Pricing and range details will follow later in the year.

GMC Adds Rear-Steer Mode and Carbon Fibre Edition to 2026 HUMMER EV Lineup

The new King Crab rear-steer mode is now standard on all 2X and 3X Pickup and SUV trims, allowing the rear wheels to turn faster than the front for greater maneuverability in tight off-road spaces. The feature will also be made available via an over-the-air update for all HUMMER EV Pickup and SUV models from 2022 through 2025.

An extremely limited Carbon Fibre Edition Pickup and SUV join the 2026 lineup, offering a 0–96 km/h acceleration time of just 2.8 seconds. Enabled by the 24-module battery and advanced propulsion calibration, the edition is now the quickest HUMMER EV available. Both versions feature a Magnus Gray Matte exterior and Velocity Ember interior along with carbon fibre accents and 22-inch wheels.

The 2026 HUMMER EV 3X Pickup remains the most powerful in its class, delivering 1,160 horsepower and 13,000 lb-ft of torque. Enhancements to damper tuning are designed to improve ride quality, while a 13.4-inch infotainment display with a split view screen and integrated app store is standard. GMC has also included an upgraded Super Cruise driver-assistance system with a 3-year trial period.

Production of the 2026 HUMMER EV will begin in summer 2025 at GM’s Factory ZERO facility in Detroit and Hamtramck. Canadian deliveries will begin later in the year. Final pricing and range figures will be released closer to launch. Both the 2025 EV Pickup and SUV 2X start at $131,098.
